The CERTAIN project (Certification for Ethical and Regulatory Transparency in Artificial Intelligence) has officially launched, setting the stage for significant advancements in the AI and data value chain. Supported by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe funding, CERTAIN aims to deliver solutions that ensure data holders, dataspaces, AI system providers, and deployers comply with European regulations in a timely and cost-effective manner.
The project, which began on 1 January 2025, brings together a diverse consortium of leading industry players, academic institutions, and research organisations. Partners gathered for the project's kickoff meeting in Osny, France, on 24 January 2025, marking the start of this ambitious effort to create a robust foundation for AI certification.
CERTAIN addresses the critical need for compliance with European regulatory frameworks by developing comprehensive guidelines and technical tools. These tools will help stakeholders assess data quality and measure biases in datasets, protect privacy, and streamline compliance. Through these measures, CERTAIN seeks to establish trustworthiness in AI-based products, ensuring they meet high standards of quality and reliability.
A cornerstone of CERTAIN is its effort to lay the groundwork for AI certification. The project translates regulations into actionable business terms and creates a platform to simplify and streamline certification processes. In addition to compliance, CERTAIN tackles the environmental challenges of the AI value chain. By developing innovative techniques to reduce energy consumption during the development and operation of AI systems, the project supports Europe’s Green Deal objectives while lowering costs for AI stakeholders.
